Hurricane Ike, the Dodgers’ playoff hunt, Frankie Rodriguez’s record, USC, UCLA, and the LA train wreck top this week’s news Hurricane Ike is obviously the top story of the nation. I have a friend whose father lives in San Antonio. She told me that his city isn’t going to be hit directly, but there are tons of evacuees right now seeking a place to stay until the hurricane settles down. I’m glad that he’s ok. Speaking of evacuees, I have a hard time on why people don’t believe in the National Weather Service’s warning that people will face certain death if they do not evacuate the area. Of course, there may be some legitimate reasons such as experiencing “Chicken Little” warnings from the government, but this unfortunately is not one of them. People also cite “faith and fate” as a reason to stay, which I’ll never understand. Now the 140,000 people that are possibly stranded are seeking help after intial refusal. It’s just so frustrating that people are now seeking help, wasting our tax money (as well as the lives of the rescuers), after they “didn’t need the help.” After Gov. Rick Perry’s warning to evacuate the projected area went unheeded for many people, the only thing he can do now, according to him, is pray. No kidding! True Blue is now red hot! The Dodgers have won 11 of their last 12 games to retain their lead in the N.L. West. Better news is that the remaining schedule is against Colorado, Pittsburgh, San Diego, and San Francisco, all with losing records and no chance of reaching the playoffs. Arizona also faces Colorado, San Francisco, and Cincinnati (losing records), but St. Louis (winning record) remains their only formidable barrier to reach the playoffs. Remember, only a division title can ensure a playoff spot for the Dodgers, because Milwaukee is far too good in the Wild Card spot. Congratulations to Frankie Rodriguez for clinching an MLB record of most saves in a season. He could clinch a Cy Young award this year. I’m a Dodgers fan, but I really do hope Rodriguez wins this one. Speaking of red hot, USC Football made a statement yesterday running all over #5 Ohio State by the score of 35-3, ensuring their number #1 spot in the nation. Unfortunately, UCLA also showed their true ice-cold blue colors being annihilated by #18 BYU 59-0! 59-0! This new head coach, Rick Neuheisel, was supposed to bring UCLA back to Pac-10 dominance. Not happening. Worst loss ever! Are we rushing to judgment on the L.A. train wreck that claimed at least 25 people? The NTSB says yes, although it’s also becoming increasingly clear that the engineer was to blame for the train wreck. It is also possible that the engineer was texting while driving! Now, we have a law against driving with a hands-on cell phone, but texting is still legal while driving. If what the engineer did was true, then the lawmakers who wrote this law have a lot to answer for on this one. BREAKING NEWS: Green Party activist Peter Camejo dies at 68. Well, that’s it for this week. See you next Sunday!
